Forestry Guide Tools

This is a help file explaining the use of the Subject Catalogue, Source Type Catalogue, and the Local Search Engine. A general structural overview and tips & tricks are also provided.

Country Code

In our database we use the ISO 3166 code to map the country of the described thematic server. Two-letter alphabetic codes are used. See also the code listof the Council of European National Top level domain Registries(CENTR).

Language Code

In our database we use the ISO 639-1 code (from Unicode, Inc.) to map the language(s) of the WWW documents . Two-letter lower-case characters are used.

Keyword List

The keywords used in the Forestry Guide are searchable by Forestry Guide search options. CAB Thesaurus (Vol. 1 & Vol. 2., 1995 Edition, ISBN: 0 85198949 7), has been used for the keyword selection.Most of the keywords are also searchable in AGROVOC Multilingual Agricultural Thesaurus (3.ed., 1995, English Version, ISBN: 92-5-103769-8).The Multilingual Agricultural Thesaurus has been published by APIMONDIA in agreement by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

Source Type Catalogue:

The Source Type Catalog arranges records by type of the resources. A list of all document types used in Forestry Guide is available. Those types that are not self-explanatory have a short description.

Subject Catalogue:

The Subject Catalogue arranges records according to the CABI codes. The CABI codes are provided by CAB International, a global not-for-profit organisation specialising in sustainable solutions for agricultural and environmental problems.

Forestry Guide Metadata Concept

The concept of metadata used in the SSG-FI project is based on Dublin Core and complemented by a few more elements, As the so-called "SSG categories", statistical data (STATISTICS) and an evaluation of the resource (EVALUATION) have been added. The internal categories are used for database administration only and are not displayed in the SSG-FI system.
The template used to catalog and describe resources is identical in the different academic disciplines involved, except in the classification scheme used. In the Forestry Guide, the CABI subject category codes and subject descriptors, derived from the CABI Classification scheme and used in AGRICOLA and AGRIS databases are used for indexing the information resources.
